Light That Fire

When people ask me what I do, I tell them I’m a graphic recorder. When they invariably ask me what that is, I say I go to meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences, and record what’s being said with live visual notes, using markers on paper or foam core.

Usually, they still have no idea what I’m talking about, so I take out my phone and show them some examples. And when they actually see my work, they understand. 🤩

This process of explaining what I do is also a great example of why it’s effective. It can be hard to understand descriptions without illustrations and illustrations without descriptions. But when words and images work together, they ignite comprehension the way a spark hitting butane makes a lighter flame. Add the excitement that happens when those words and images are created live in the room by an actual person, and it’s more like a bonfire!
