On October 23, I spent a day with the Networks for Training and Development, an organization that works to find employment for people with disabilities, at the Independence Visitors Center, right across the street from Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The goal of the meeting, Reimagining Employment, was to develop a strategic plan for the coming year, and I recorded the group’s responses to a series of questions on a large piece of paper in the front of the room.
The group included both people who advocate for employment and those who have benefited from their work, and many who folks who are in both categories. In the face of budget cuts, mass layoffs in organizations that have historically welcomed those with disabilities, and the government shutdown (which has closed the Visitors Center to actual visitors for the duration), this work is more important than ever.
I heard a lot of inspiring stories, witnessed much determined energy, and saw a really great improv performance. Thanks to Michelle Sparling and Networks for Training and Development for having me–I’m proud and pleased to have contributed!
